Hemi-Sync

Developed by Robert Monroe in the 1960s and 1970s, Hemi Sync’s effects and capabilities are brought to the experiencer through a pair of headphones.

Refined with over 50 years of research and development, and supported by numerous independent studies, reports, and articles, the patented Hemi-Sync® technology has been scientifically and clinically proven to be effective.

This unique audio-guidance process works through the generation of complex, multi-layered audio signals, which act together to create a resonance that is reflected in unique brainwave forms characteristic of specific states of consciousness.

When you hear these through stereo headphones or speakers, your brain responds by producing a third sound (called a binaural beat) that encourages the desired brainwave activity.

The result is a focused, whole-brain state known as hemispheric synchronization, or Hemi-Sync®, where the left and right hemispheres are working together in a state of coherence.

I first came to Hemi Sync through a Joseph Chiltern Pearce book, likely Evolution’s End, which is a great book on it’s own. It didn’t take much time to discover just how incredible Hemi-Sync  is.  During the more advanced meditations my third eye would activate, and I had to stop because it was too intense. I also was concerned that with my hearing disability that I might not be receiving it properly.

After many years and my passage through some extremely traumatic experiences, I have been revisiting this material lately, working through it with care. Trance states used to be something I could slip into without much difficulty. Today, after a single 30 minute session five days a week for three months I am starting to achieve deeper relaxation states with the Hemi-Sync Intro to Focus 10 in the Gateway Experience. This is of course, providing I don’t fall asleep during it, which happens from time to time.

I also listen to an album specifically for concentration. Instead of being a guided meditation like the Focus 10, it’s just the binaural tones. The tones can go to the background fairly easily, and greatly assist in concentration of daily tasks. I find I have fewer errant thoughts crossing my mind when I use this.

Synchronicity has brought Hemi-Sync into my life a couple times. The first time was when talking to a new friend about meditation, and she had actually been to a few Hemi-Sync sessions here in Winnipeg. Today she is my partner in crime.

Another instance occurred during one of my volunteer experiences. While giving time in the LINKS program at the Learning Disability Association of Manitoba, I discovered they use a simple Hemi-Sync relaxation track for the kids with learning disabilities. They only listened to about five minutes or so, maybe less depending on time available. But it was enough to calm the kids and assist their focus. I was really excited to see it being applied in a learning setting for children.

It’s not just for relaxation and focus, but can help with falling asleep. Julia uses the Healing Yourself album as she finds it very effective for falling asleep when her mind doesn’t turn off.

Hemi-Sync is one of those things that has an incredible potential that just needs more advocates. Like ecovillages. Depending on the album you listen to, it can turn meditating into something you listen to on the bus, while working or on lunch break, which are great habits to have anyways.
